Thursday’s matches bring about the midway point of the Europa League group phase matches. This could be an important night for all of the clubs, as for one reason or another, they all have a point to prove. Anzhi are the only team to play on Russian soil tonight as they face Tromso in Ramenskoye, whilst Kuban and Rubin both travel to the UK to face Swansea City and Wigan respectively.

Anzhi v Tromso

Anzhi are a team in chaos. They currently sit bottom of the RPL table, with just 6 points from 13 games so far. Dealing with such a peculiar transition from having a huge budget, to a relatively modest one, has been extremely tough for the Dagestan club. Players were sold left right and centre, and left Anzhi with an almost unrecognisable squad compared to the previous seasons. However, they will still feel as though they can qualify in 2nd place in this group, as Tottenham aside, Anzhi still have enough to challenge the other two teams, FC Sheriff and Thursday’s opponents Tromso, who sit 3rd bottom in the Norwegian Premier Division, despite winning against Viking at the weekend.

Team News and Tactics  Coach Gadzhiev will be delighted to have a near full fit squad for this game against Tromso, with just Maksimov officially missing through injury. Having Lacina Traore available again will be a massive boost to Anzhi, as he is clinical when provided with chances. I expect Anzhi to start off in a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Gatagov or Razak playing in behind hitman Lacina Traore. Jucilei and Ahmedov will be important (as ever) in controlling the game and transitioning defence to attack. It will be interesting to see who Gadzhiev opts to select at the heart of defence, as he does not seem to settle on a particular pairing, with 3 different ones in the last 4 games.

Tromso will probably start off in a 4-4-2 formation with top scorers Ondrasek and Johansen potentially starting together up front. Tromso coach Nilsen could also opt to play Johansen in midfield along with Bendiksen. Drage can be a threat from the wings, so Anzhi will have to be guarded.

Danger Men

Traore (Anzhi)- His presence was sorely missed when he was injured this season and it’s not difficult to see why with so many positive attributes. It can be argued that he is Anzhi’s only top drawer player now, and a lot of responsibility will fall on his shoulders in tonight’s game.

Ondrasek (Tromso)- The Czech U21 international is without doubt one of Tromso’s key players. Nicknamed ‘The Cobra’, Ondrasek is a clinical finisher and he scored Tromso’s only Europa League goal so far against FC Sheriff. Anzhi will have to prevent any chances going his way otherwise they will be punished.

Stat Zone

Tromso could easily have beaten Sheriff in the last match, but they were obviously outclassed against Tottenham. Here we take a look at Tromso’s stats in the Europa League thus far. Tromso EL stats:

Goals scored 1
Goals Conceded 4
Average Number of goals scored per game 0.5
Average Goals Conceded 2
Yellow Cards 5
Fouls Committed 11
Fouls Against 14
Corners 7
Shots on Target 1
Shots off Target 7
Tromso’s stats do not make for positive reading. Despite playing 2 games, they have only managed a single shot on target- they scored from this too, and this is something they will have to improve on. Anzhi will hope that they can limit Tromso’s attacking capabilities as Tromso can be a threat from set plays, defending which have been a weakness for Anzhi recently.
Prediction: Anzhi 1-0 Tromso

Can Popov inspire struggling Kuban tonight?

Can Popov inspire struggling Kuban tonight?

Swansea City v Kuban
Kuban have had had a terrible start to the RPL campaign, they currently sit 11th place in the table, a really poor showing for a team in which many had high hopes for this season. Their shocking run of form in all competitions, in which they have lost 3 of their last 4 games, ultimately cost coach Muntenau his job. New manager Goncharenko will be hoping his side can put on a better display  than in the weekends 3-1 defeat to Dynamo,  in South Wales this evening.
Swansea have also had a difficult start to their domestic campaign,as they currently sit 11th in the Premier League table. Coach Laudrup will be encouraged by his teams good performances in the Europa League thus far though, as the Swans have picked up maximum points up to now. Swansea come into this game on the back of a 4-0 win over struggling Sunderland, so despite probable changes in personnel, Swansea will be full of confidence.
Team News and Tactics
The hosts will probably make a number of changes to the team that won in the Premier League at the weekend. Swansea will probably start off in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with star man Michu either leading the line, or supporting record signing Wilfried Bony in attack. Pozuelo is likely to start, and he has received a lot of praise for his performances since joining from Real Betis in the summer. De Guzman could start alongside Canas in central midfield.
Kuban still have summer recruit Rabiu out with a groin problem until next month, but other than that, Goncharenko has a full squad to pick from. In the weekends defeat to Dynamo, the coach opted to start Balde ahead of Cisse. However, I expect Cisse to be named in the starting 11, with the promising talents of Uruguayan Bueno supporting him. Popov will be instrumental in midfield and could cause the Swans problems with his shooting. Xandao and Dealbert will have to be guarded against Swansea’s clever interchange.
Danger Men
Bony (Swansea)- Bony has been in excellent goalscoring form in the Europa League for Swansea, he has netted 4 in 6 matches so far and will be looking to add to that tonight. He is big and powerful, but also a wonderful finisher with a good turn of pace. Kuban will have to be aware of his link up with Michu.
Popov (Kuban)- Popov has been such a key player in recent seasons for Kuban, he was superb in last seasons campaign which took the Krasnodar club to the Europa League. His form of late has suffered, but he is certainly not alone in that respect. On his day though, his vision and shooting will cause any teams problems.
Stats Zone
Here we take a look at Swansea’s stats from their 2 Europa League games so far.
Swansea
Goals For 4
Goals Against 1
Average goals scored per game 2
Average goals conceded per game 0.5
Shots on Target 11
Shots off Target 15
Corners 6
Yellow Cards 3
Red Cards 0
Fouls Committed 26
Fouls Against 29
Swansea have showed great ability in the Europa League so far, surprising most people with their dominating away victory in Valencia. The stats show that although Swansea are considered a fluent attacking side, they also know how to defend as they have conceded just the 1 goal so far. Expect Swansea to create a lot of chances if Kuban sit back, so the visitors will need to have a positive game plan.
Prediction: Swansea 2-0 Kuban

Wigan Athletic v Rubin Kazan

Rubin, like the other Russian Europa League participants, have struggled domestically this year so far. They currently sit 10th in the RPL table, and lost 2-1 to perennial strugglers Volga at the weekend. Coach Berdyev has sort refuge in the Europa League this year, and their performances in this competition have been top drawer, winning both games so far and scoring 9 in the process. The team from Kazan will be hoping to expand on these results with another win in Lancashire tonight.

Wigan are in a strange situation for a club playing European football, as they are in the 2nd tier of English football as well as participating in the Europa League due to their FA cup success over Man City in May. Owen Coyle’s men will have so many games this year, that their form in all competitions will inevitably suffer and they currently sit mid table in the Championship. They have started the Europa League well though, with a draw in Belgium against Zulte and a solid home win over Maribor last time out.

Team News and Tactics

The hosts will probably start off in a 4-3-3 formation, with Barnett or on loan Stoke man Shotton partnering Rogne at the heart of defence. Coyle could choose to rotate his midfield by playing Espinoza instead of Jordi Gomez in this one. Grant Holt could return to the starting lineup, and spearhead the attack with Callum McManaman or Manchester Utd loanee Nick Powell supporting from the flanks.

Berdyev is still without top striker Salomon Rondon, so Mukhametshin could lead the line up front. He will probably be supported by wingers Torbinski and Karadeniz in a 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation. Star man Natkho will be in midfield alongside M’Vila and possibly Ryazantsev.

Danger Men

Powell (Wigan)- Nick Powell has a great future in the game, and has really caught the eye since his loan move from Manchester United. He possesses all the necessary attributes to make it a the top as he already has his own style of play where he drifts between the midfield and defence to cause problems. Whether as a substitute or a starter, Rubin’s backline will have to be wary of him.

Natkho (Rubin)- In the absence of star man Rondon, Natkho has been pulling the strings in this Rubin team. He has a great eye for a pass and also doesn’t mind getting stuck in. Wigan will have to watch out for his fantastic set pieces too.

Stats Zone

Here we take a look at Wigan’s stats in the Europa League so far.

Wigan:

Goals For 3
Goals Against 1
Average goals scored per game 1.5
Average goals conceded per game 0.5
Shots on Target: 8
Shots off Target 11
Corners 11
Yellow Cards: 1
As you can see, Wigan have created a lot of chances in their first two games, and they were unlucky not to win in Waregem, so Rubin will have to defend well this evening. Rubin will have to take the game to Wigan, as the early goal could be vital here.
Prediction: Wigan 1-2 Rubin
